tl;dr

Virtual real estate in the Metaverse.

Market Snap (at time of writing)

Market Wrap

No sign of any relief to the crypto pain encouraging the likes of J.P. Morgan to start blathering about the end of crypto days or something equally ridiculous.

Which is about as insightful as Professor Neil Ferguson, who stated at the beginning of December 2021 that if there were no further restrictions beyond Plan B that the UK would see at best 3,000 deaths a day and potentially 5,000 deaths a day in January from Omicron. Why does anyone listen to his perpetual doom-mongering?

Curious Cryptos’ Definition of the Day – Metaverse

First used in Neal Stephenson’s 1992 cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, a hacker living in a dystopian Los Angeles can enter a virtual world to interact with other avatars.

The Oxford English Dictionary describes it thus:

“… virtual-reality space in which users can interact with a computer-generated environment and other users”.

Curious Cryptos’ Commentary – Metaverse

A topic which we have not really discussed in any depth, though we did touch on it way back on 14th November 2021. This is a subject that is likely to increasingly hog the crypto headlines going forward.

Adidas have already opened their first virtual store. Samsung, who recently launched the very first range of Non-Fungible Token (NFT) enabled TVs, has now followed suit in partnership with Decentraland.

Decentraland is an early entrant into the Metaverse, and possibly the largest right now.

One of the very first Metaverse experiments was Second Life, whose main activity has pivoted to provide a sex-based playground to live out personal fantasies through the medium of your avatar. Or so I am told.

If anyone wishes to write a first-hand account of their own experiences in Second Life purely for educational purposes, the CCC is happy to publish on either an attributed or non-attributed basis.

Samsung’s virtual store in Decentraland will offer digital adventures through “Connectivity Theater (sic) and Sustainability Forest”, whatever that may mean.

I leave it to Michelle Crossan-Matos, senior vice president of corporate marketing and communications at Samsung Electronics America to explain in more depth:

"The metaverse empowers us to transcend physical and spatial limits to create unique virtual experiences that could not happen otherwise."

I highly recommend spending some time having a test run in Decentraland.

You will quickly realise that this is a project in the making. I think when using it, it is useful to keep in mind where it could possibly get to in 2, 5 or 10-years’ time.

Decentraland has its own crypto of course, MANA, which can be used to interact within the environment.

For the brave, land is for sale, on which you can build whatever it is you wish to build. As there is for all the other Metaverse alternatives e.g. Sandbox.

Decentraland has its own marketplace:

There are even Real Estate agencies that provide buying, selling and development services, of which this is just one (please note, this is taken at random and no comment on its veracity should be implied by its inclusion in the CCC):

The combination of NFTs and the Metaverse is starting to revolutionise commerce, and companies’ interaction with their customer base.

Reserve Treasury Protocols (before they all go to zero)

Reminder – Olympus and Wonderland are, to the best of my knowledge, live viable projects. XEUS, FORT and JADE turned out to be scams, though they are still live scams. Scams are not uncommon in these Wild West fringes of Decentralised Finance (DeFi).

Photon appears to have won the prize for being the most extraordinary scam. In under 18 hours it went to zero. And as far as I can tell – and I am no blockchain analytics expert – they walked away with less than $30k.

It is very upsetting we have scumbags like that around.
