3.1: How Much Should You Invest and What Should You Invest In?

There are no easy answers to these questions. It is possible there are no right answers. There are certainly a lot of wrong answers.

Investing in crypto currencies is a totally different ball game to any other investment strategy:

  • The volatility can be quite extraordinary — both a blessing and a curse.
  • There is little to no regulation of the tens of thousands of individual cryptos.
  • Security of your assets and private keys is fundamentally important. If you lose your private keys, you lose your funds.

The golden rule: never invest more than you can afford to lose.

Additionally, until you feel entirely comfortable with the whole process of funding an exchange account, buying cryptos, and transferring to your wallet, never put more than a few pounds into the process. It is easy to make mistakes, and there is no-one who can help you if you do.

As regards what to invest in — and we are not providing financial advice — some broad guidelines: consider a portfolio weighted toward BTC and ETH with a small allocation to alts. Many alts are scams and many more will fail. Dollar cost averaging (DCA) is most likely to lower your acquisition cost over time.
