2.3: The Elon Musk Scam

As one of the most famous supporters of crypto, Elon Musk's image is a natural target for scammers.

In February 2021, a series of tweets using a fake Elon Musk account directed recipients to a website purporting to give away BTC for free. The website claimed Musk would send back double any BTC between 0.1 and 20 BTC sent to a wallet address, with a ticking timer adding urgency.

One individual sent 10 BTC — worth just shy of $600,000 — to this wallet. He never received anything back. He described his reaction: finding out he had potentially thrown away his family's financial future and early retirement fund.

This is one of the oldest scams in human history dressed up in the costume of current technology.
