ZachXBT, an online sleuth who has retrieved much stolen crypto, identified the individuals behind a $250mm scam targeting a Genesis creditor.
The scammers first pretended to be from Google support, then followed up by pretending to be from Genesis. The victim agreed to move cryptos worth a quarter of a billion dollars to a new wallet on the advice of someone on the phone.
When faced with such a situation, you have two options. You can agree to move your funds to a wallet for which you do not know the private key on a stranger's say-so. Or you can refuse and hang up.
The rule is simple: never move crypto funds on the instruction of someone who contacts you unexpectedly, regardless of who they claim to be.
