This is a scam you are most likely to come across. It takes the form of a website pretending to be a legitimate newspaper report about an individual who appeared on Dragon's Den with a crypto investment scheme, claiming the Dragons invested millions.
If you follow the link, the scheme promises to invest your money in cryptos using AI with a 99%+ success rate. There are fake testimonials showing large gains, and a notice that places are limited — a classic pressure tactic.
On sign up you deposit £250. A salesperson calls encouraging you to invest more. One victim was told their £5,000 had grown to £50,000, but when they tried to withdraw, they were told to pay a 10% commission upfront. They paid £5,000 — and never heard from them again.
According to Action Fraud, 1,560 cases of crypto scams were reported in the first six months of 2019 alone — and that is certainly an understatement of the true number.
