Introduction
Module 1.11 described in detail how to set up MetaMask for use as an online web wallet, known as a "hot" wallet. All hot wallets suffer from a significant risk of being hacked by malicious actors, often using a form of phishing scam.
But there is a simple solution. It is possible to combine the security of Ledger Nano with the utility and ease of use of MetaMask. This module tells you how.
Connecting Ledger Nano
- Once MetaMask has been set up and you are logged in, click on the account dropdown menu at the top.
- Choose "+ Add account or hardware wallet".
- On the next screen click "Ledger" — you will be invited to plug in your Ledger Nano and open the Ethereum app.
- Click continue and connect.
- You will be prompted to open Ledger Live, the desktop application used to manage the firmware and apps for Ledger Nano.
- Approve the bridging process, select the appropriate account, and you are in.
All transactions using this public address in MetaMask need to be approved first on your Ledger Nano — nothing can happen without your express permission.
